They found that 169 (1.2 percent) were followed by an unplanned readmission within 30 days. Leading causes of readmission included postoperative infections (19.5 percent), pain (4.7 percent), thromboembolic events (4.1 percent), and pulmonary complications (3.0 percent). Independent predictors of readmission included age of 70 to 84 years, smoking, lower hematocrit, renal dialysis, and elbow procedure (with or without hand procedure).
