2026–2027 Boucher Orthopaedic Trauma Research Fellowship - Johns Hopkins
HotThe Johns Hopkins Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Division of Trauma, invites outstanding medical students to apply for the 2026–2027 Boucher Orthopaedic Trauma Research Fellowship. This paid, year-long fellowship is designed for highly motivated students with a strong interest in orthopaedic surgery and offers immersive experience in clinical research, academic productivity, mentorship, and orthopaedic trauma clinical exposure.
The fellow will work directly with Dr. Babar Shafiq, MD, MSPT, FAOA, Director of the Orthopaedic Bone Health Center and Associate Residency Program Director, and will participate in a broad range of projects including clinical trials, outcomes research, and anatomic/cadaveric studies, with opportunities to contribute to manuscripts, podium presentations, and posters at national meetings.
This fellowship is ideal for students seeking a rigorous and supportive academic year that combines hands-on research, meaningful mentorship, and clinical immersion in orthopaedic trauma. Fellows will gain experience in:
- study design, IRB development, database management, and manuscript preparation
- statistical training, abstract development, and national meeting submissions
- weekly clinical exposure, patient enrollment, and participation in conferences, grand rounds, and journal club
- close mentorship from Johns Hopkins orthopaedic trauma faculty in a highly collaborative academic environment
Eligibility
Applicants must:
- be U.S. citizens attending a U.S. medical school
- be completing their 3rd or 4th year of medical school (or able to extend graduation)
- be in good academic standing
- have completed USMLE Step 1
- demonstrate a strong interest in pursuing orthopaedic surgery
In rare cases, exceptionally qualified students completing their 2nd year may be considered.
Stipend and Benefits
The fellowship includes a stipend, travel support for national presentations, and Johns Hopkins Employer Health Programs (EHP) benefits, including medical, dental, vision, prescription, and virtual care coverage.
