2026-2027 Research Fellow Limb Lengthening and Bone and Joint Infection - Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopedics (RIAO) at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore

The Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopedics (RIAO) at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore is offering a one or two-year student research assistant position with the International Center for Limb Lengthening. This is a salaried position intended for rising third/fourth year medical students or those who are looking for a research year interested in orthopaedic surgery as a career and would begin before July 2026, ideally May 2026, depending on circumstances. Applications are currently being accepted on an ongoing basis, but we expect to fill the position within the next few months. Previous fellows have matched into ORTHO SURGERY at a 98-100% rate.

This new position is purposed for medical students intending to bolster their competitiveness in order to obtain a residency position in the field of orthopaedic surgery. Research assistants will work with national and international leaders in the areas of limb lengthening and bone and joint infection to assist with manuscript preparation for publication in peer-reviewed journals, to gather and analyze data, to attend and present your work at regional and national conferences, and to assist with FDA trials of new drugs and devices. This is a high-volume research center where numerous projects have not only been published PubMed-indexed journals, but also been selected as presentations at national orthopaedic meetings, namely the AAOS and OTA.

Research assistants will have the opportunity to attend daily morning conferences with the orthopaedic surgery residency, led by Program Director Dr. Jack Ingari, MD. This is an excellent opportunity to bolster your CV and increase your chance of matching into an orthopedic surgery residency. 

Student researchers will work under the direction of:

·         Janet D. Conway, M.D. 

·         Michael A. Assayag, M.D.

GOALS: 

·         Investigate basic science and clinical aspects of limb lengthening and bone and joint. 

·         Learn to create and extract clinical data from institutional and national databases. 

·         Develop a better appreciation for biostatistics in the setting of orthopaedics.

·         Prepare manuscripts and textbook chapters. 

·         Present at research meetings, seminars, journal clubs, symposia, and professional society meetings. 

PREREQUISITE EDUCATIONAL LEVEL OR CREDENTIALS: All candidates who have completed their third year and passed their USMLE Step 1 and/or COMLEX Level 1 board examinations. It is preferred that USMLE Step 2 is completed prior to beginning the research program. Experience in writing and biostatistics is a plus.
