2016-2017 Rothman Institute Sports Medicine Research Fellowship

The Rothman Institute at Thomas Jefferson University is now accepting applications for two Clinical Research Fellow positions within in the Division of Sports Medicine for the 2016-2017 academic year. Highly-motivated medical students interested a one-year clinical research fellowship are welcome to apply.

The Division of Sports Medicine at the Rothman Institute is made up of 21 high-volume fellowship trained academic Orthopedic Surgeons.  Our team provides care for the Philadelphia Phillies, Philadelphia Eagles, Philadelphia Flyers, Philadelphia 76ers, Philadelphia Soul, Villanova Wildcats, and St. Joseph’s University Hawks, as well as, numerous regional high schools.  The large scale and scope of the practice provides ample opportunity for a robust research program.

The fellows will be actively engaged in all facets of clinical research.  They will work in conjunction with the attending physicians, sports medicine fellows, and residents, as well as, two full time research coordinators and a statistician.  The Division of Sports Medicine has on average 75+ ongoing research projects at various stages of completion within it’s pipeline.  This ensures a highly productive year for our research fellows.

Responsibilities of the Fellows Include 

• Attendance at monthly research meetings
• Coordinating project flow and progression
• IRB creation and management
• Data collection and database management
• Patient consenting for study inclusion
• Obtaining post-operative outcome scores 
• Manuscript drafting and revisions
• Journal submissions
• Conference abstracts and poster submissions

The fellows will be expected to have 10 to 15 publications by the completion of the fellowship.  They can expect to receive authorship on projects in which they have participated in significantly and possibly present at meetings in which their projects have accepted for podium presentations.  This opportunity provides a in-depth exposure to a high-volume academic private practice.  The relationships with the attending physicians, research skill set learned, and the additional publications are invaluable for the growth and development of the fellows career.  Fellows are expected and encouraged to apply for and interview for orthopedic surgery residency positions during the year and the Sports Medicine faculty are happy to assist in this in any way possible.
