I started studying for Step 2 and am not sure if it is necessary at this point. I wanted to get the scores in time for PDs to look at them. Several attending physicians recommend step 2 but the PD states that it can hurt you a lot more than it can help. My step 1 was good (248) and the rest of my application is solid except for my LORs (AOA, research).

Any input? Dr. Levine?

Just curious, but how do you know your LORs aren't solid?

I become a mute around attendings and don't speak unless spoken to. I got a couple of questions wrong and was flat out told that I needed to increase my knowledge base when I couldn't name all the extensor compartments + contents in the hand (he was the head guy where I was rotating). A lot of my fellow rotators were confidently giving p-values for everything.

Then your statement that you got bad LOR is not founded since you did not ask people that thought less of you or your abilities/capabilities. My two cents.
I also don't think that LOR writers are in the business of making students look bad. No one gains anything by making a student look bad, obviously.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. My LORs aren't necessarily bad but they are not glowing.

The only people I stronlgy recommend taking step 2 early are those who "under-performed" (by their or external measures) on Step 1. Otherwise there is little to be gained by most applicants in taking it early.
