Hi Forum,

I was wondering about the number of aways (in addition to my home program's ortho elective) I should do. Do you guys recommend 2 or 3?

Thank you!

Depends on strength of candidacy. If you are on the weaker side on paper it may be recommended that you let more programs see you for who you are. If you are a lock on paper then it probably isn't important. I am middle of the road and did two aways. It was enough for me to feel comfortable with different types of programs. From what I hear, two aways is about the average but I know people who did three.

Thank you for the response.

To get more personalized advice, I have a 255 step 1 a mix of clinical Honors and High Passes. No publications but I have 2 posters and ongoing research. I did not get Junior AOA, and I doubt that I will get it 4th year.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

You'll be fine. Use your aways to check out programs that you want to know more about.

I'd do as many as you can possibly fit into your schedule. Nothing bad can happen from doing more aways.

Unless you are socially awkward or averse to working hard.

Any point in doing an away at HSS or HJD? How much do these places favor rotators? Also am I even remotely competitive for these programs?
