The following is going to be a very brief review of a paper and a poster recently presented at the AAOS meeting in Dallas. I am sure this is of interest for everyone on this site, especially those applying in the next few years.
According to a paper written by Carmichael and Bajaj titled The Qualifications of a Successful Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Applicant, applicants and faculty orthopaedists at teaching institutions have different views regarding the qualifications of the successful applicant. "The most important attributes to obtaining a residency were performance on a local rotation (externship), class rank and interview performance according to faculty. Applicants believed performance on local rotations, USMLE step 1, and letters of recommendation were the three most important."
A paper published by Berstein et al looks at the level of importance that applicants and program directors place on different application criteria. According to this study, "[a]pplicants ranked the following criteria as most important]
