Moving... advice

My wife and I looked into a couple of possibilities, pods, penske, allied, uhaul, etc. The best we landed on was a penske truck and a trailer to drag a car. You can get estimates on all of these on their websites.

I'd echo that last message about truck companies...Penske is BY FAR the better moving truck rental company when compared to UHAUL. At least in my area, UHAUL is ghetto, charges for the most trivial things, strap-ties a hand-truck in the storage space of the truck bed and charges you to take it off, even if only to get it out of the way and make room for stuff. They're also more expensive mile for mile. Plus the trucks themselves have always been crap compared to Penske.

I would recommend selling everything that can't fit in your car, unless it is a family heirloom. If you add up the cost of a move, it is usually about what your stuff is worth (at this point in your life!).

i rented a penske truck to move from chicago to new york city. was a nice truck and much cheaper than hiring a movers. did it in two days with my wife and had friends help on both sides. wasn't too bad.

most importantly, keep all your receipts as the move is tax deductible (supplies, tolls, gas, rental truck, meals, etc)

Agree with ortho08...avoid UHaul at all costs. Possibly the most unreliable company in existence. Budget is another option, but Penske is probably cheaper.

i moved from michigan to california. sold my condo and nearly everything i owned (including a piano, all my furniture, and a ton of appliances.) the rest i donated, recycled, gave to friends, or trashed. i ended up shipping about $200 worth of stuff that wouldn't fit in my car and then i loaded up (with a dog and a cat - seriously limited the amount of stuff i could fit in my car) and put my bikes on top of my little saturn and drove across the country.

renting a truck for all my stuff would have been ridiculously expensive. keep all your receipts (even for gas) as, like was said above, the move is tax-deductible.
