Being that my USMLE scores aren't the most competitive (227 & 257 respectively), I was considering applying to Gen Surg as a backup. I was wanting to know if anyone knew if you had to write an add'l personal statment, as well as, have General Surgeons Letters of Rec'd to apply for Prelim Gen Surg or can you use Ortho letters since it isn't a five year position? Thanks in advance!

I think you should have Gen Surg specific application materials, in addition to your Ortho specific stuff. Everyone that I know who applied for Gen Surg backup, did this.
