Female-friendly ortho programs

i matched at pitt, 5 out of the 8 we matched are females

I heard that Rush and Georgetown are tough to break as females.

I think you should look at pitt, it is a great program and Dr. FU is all about changing the face of orthopaedics. You should also considering rotating, we will hook you up

Just matched at USC and we had 4 of the 10 spots go to women this year. I know USC consistantly has a lot of females in the program, including the chief resident this year and their are quite a few on staff... something to consider along with the 80 degree weather while its snowing in the rest of the country.

I matched at Loyola, where 2/5 are women, with several other women in the program. Places I rotated/interviewed that seemed female friendly were: Stanford, UNC, Harvard, Ohio St, Minnesota, Mayo, Wisconsin, Maryland, MCW. Check out these places if at all interested. Good Luck!

I think you are at an advantage being a female and wanting to do ortho - it's kind of like being male and doing OB - programs love to tout their diversity

I am a third year who wants to do ortho but I am not AOA with a 240 Step 1 score. Hopefully the rest of my app will be able to fill in the gaps

When I interviewed at SUNY Buffalo the chairman told me (male by the way) that he was activley recruiting female attendings and residents.

Sounds a lot like me (except, I'm male). I matched. If the rest of your application is solid you should be fine.

I matched at Penn and 3 of 8 are female.

From the current makeup of residents at places on the interview trail i'd say these are female friendly:

NYU
Duke
UCSF
USC
Harbor-UCLA
UChicago
UVA
HSS
St.Lukes-Roosevelt (dont have any but are dying to get one felt like)

Please remember-Just because a program dosen't have any females dosen't mean they aren't a female friendly program.........once a program is scarred with not having a female in a few years they are automatically branded as being UN-female friendly which is NOT ALWAYS the case. Some have ranked females highly, but those females chose to go elsewhere (where there were females)............This is not to distract from the fact that there are several programs who aren't as receptive to having collegues with a uterus.....you just have to feel them out for yourself. If its not from the horses mouth (female who said they hated a program or was treated unfairly, female faculty who left becasue they personally said it was a hostile environment or male faculty/resident who personally stated they dont wanna work with chics) then take it for what it is......gossip.

Also don't write off a program because they don't have enough female faculty. Fact is women make up less than 4% of the field so you can't expect everyone of those women to go into academics.

Finally, dont write off a program because of that one old timer from the old school who just is stuck in their ways............there is bound to be an old dog at most programs. you will not LOVE every single attending and if you are going into ortho this is like football..........DONT PLAY THE SPORT IF YOU CANT TAKE A HIT.........ITS A CONTACT SPORT- YOU WILL GET HIT!

I matched at JPS and 2 of the 4 (including me) incoming interns are women - woo hoo!

Our program is 25% female and 3 out of the 4 chief residents in the upcoming year is female. The chief residents are a big part of the interviewing / admission process. So I think Umass is probably considered "female friendly". Doing a rotation here will definitely help. We tend to have less rotators than some of the bigger programs (about 10-15 each year), so doing a good job will make you stand out. Good luck with the process.

Check out UAB if you're interested in the Southeast. They love females orthopods there.

We currently have 26% of the residents in our program who are women (4 of 6 from last year's match and none this year - interviewed the same number of women just the way the computer worked out?!).

I would like to agree with one of my fellow posters that just because a program has not taken a woman in a long time does not mean they are not "female friendly".

For example, before I matched at Michigan State University-Kalamazoo there had not been a woman resident there in 17 years. I was fortunate to spend a month there as a medical student and found that all of the attendings and residents were excellent teachers, the opeative experience even starting out as a brand new two was amazing, and the community was congenial and professional. I was interested in a community program as well, and it is has turned out to be a great fit. I would definitely recommend Michigan State University-Kalamazoo program to any female applicant.

Also, my chairman is asking me all the time what he can do to bring in more female applicants, Kalamazoo is definitely actively searching for more women residents. My class at Wake is 2 out of 4 female. The program has been consistently woman friendly for several years. It is worth looking into.
