Is it pretty much where you do residency = where you practice? The reason I ask is because my wife and I live in Chicago, and although we would be very happy to stay here, I think we would both rather be in the NY area where we have more family.

But holy-mother-of-god is it expensive!!!
Your dollar goes A LOT farther here (our place would cost about 3x as much in Manhattan and about 2x as much in Brooklyn).

So, if I stay here in good ol' chi-town, am I here for life? Or is it possible to move out east post-residency and find a place to practice(if I don't do I fellowship)?

Sorry to ask such a noob question, but my school is about as crappy as they come on these issues.

It doesn't matter where you trained. You will have opportunities to practice anywhere there are jobs. It still helps to network though.
