UT Southwestern

Just wanted to ask how Parkland compares nationally (top ten, third?). Is it extreme academics? Are the
residents well trained for private practice? I am currently finishing second year at Oklahoma and want to
know if I should consider an away there. Anyone interviewed there?

Thanks,

Re: UT Southwestern

I rotated at Parkland. The residents are trained very well in trauma, which is definitely the medical
center's strength. UTSW is a huge referral center for pelvis/acetabuluar trauma.

Academically, the program is working to improve their conferences and research, which is not on the
same playing field as a Duke or even Vanderbilt. However, very few of the residents are there because of
the academics. Dr. Bucholz is very well-known (they call Rockwood and Green "RGB" because he's the
third author) and the residents have a good relationship with him.

The residents train at Parkland for PGY-1 and 2. They leave Parkland for an entire year during PGY-3,
though, and do several private rotations, including one at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital (one of the most
sought-after peds fellowships in the US).

I'd advise you to rotate there if you guess you would rank it highly. I think I've posted about this before,
but they interview about 50-60 people for five spots during two days. One day is for "knowns" =
rotators or UTSW students, and the other is for "unknowns" = nonrotators. Usually they go with 4:1
knowns to unknowns on their final choices.

Most of the male residents seemed to fit into a pretty consistent mold. There were a couple of rare
exceptions, so I'd guess they don't look to branch out too often in their selection of new residents.

Regarding research/academics, there is a PGY-2 there who did a lot of high-powered research at HSS
who interviewed at about 26/28 places he applied to and ranked UTSW first, so go figure.
