I requested and just received an informational packet from the ortho program at UC Davis. It sounds like a great program but there is a statement in the section on resident training that says "A sixth year research rotation at the PG3 level is being considered effective July 1, 2001." I was wondering if there are any residents at this program, or others in the know, who can tell me if this is a required sixth year or if it is elective. I like the idea of a program that gives that option, in case residents decide they want it, but on the other hand, as a third year med student and potential applicant, it seems a little early to have to know this for sure. In fact, while I am at this, does anyone know of other programs that have a required sixth year?

Ohio State has a required research year for one resident out of 4 after the 3rd year, starting with my intern class.

I also believe UCSF has it for one or two of their residents. And on this topic, which one or two will it be, should I not even apply if I don't want to do the research and would be somewhat miserable spending an extra year doing it?
