Summer Research

I am currently a first year medical student deciding what to do with my summer. I have a 10 week
summer
vacation. For the first three weeks, I will be traveling abroad to do some medical work and get more
clinical experience. I am still deciding what to do for the remaining 7 weeks. Should I get involved in some
ortho research?? I don't particularly enjoy research, but I will do it if it will help me in my ortho residency
applications. If I do research, should I do it for all 7 weeks? I was hoping to go home and spend time
with
my family. In other words, I would do research for 3-4 weeks and spend the remaining portion of the
summer at home. Any advice?? Also, is basic science research preferred to clinical research??

Re: Summer Research

I would enjoy that first summer. Once you get into your clinical years and residency there will be much
less time for family.

Re: Summer Research

personally, i would look into researching first year. I did this since i figured that after boards 2nd year the
last thing i would want to do is research, and 3rd year you don't have time to research, and by 4th year
you really can't get a publication out. If you are in the NY area I know the Hospital for Joint Diseases has
a great externship you can apply for in which you research, see patients in the faculty practice, and scrub
in on cases during your first year summer. It lasts for ~8wks and you get paid a stipend. I would highly
recommend it.
