I recently interviewed at a program that I liked more than I thought I would. It is quite a distance from where I live and I'd like to take my spouse to have a look at the area and see more of the places the residents work. I'm also low on $! Is it a reasonable thing to call the program to ask them if they're considering me as a higher tier candidate before I spend the money? They interviewed a fairly high number of students and I don't want to waste all that money if I'm not even in their top 20 after interviews. I also don't want them to think less of me for calling seeking that kind of information. Advice greatly appreciated!

I would like to hear people's thoughts on this as well. Thanks.
