I am one of the aching unmatched souls who is dead set on a career as an orthopedist. After speaking with many in the field (including residency directors, several chairmen, and others who went unmatched in the past only to pull it off after x years of applying), I made the decision to do research for the year. I have found a few un-paid positions with my home school, but would like to make at least minimal money once I graduate. The options are either taking the unpaid spot and getting another job, or finding the paid spot (would prefer this, but I have not found many postings). Does any one have advise for finding a good research position?
Also, seems like several folks have had success opting for the surgical prelim year (reapplying or shooting into an open PGY spot)--Way to go!

It is more like finding a conventional job as opposed to finding a residency. You will need to do the research and network with people. You can always e-mail a bunch of chairmen and ask them if they have research positions available. Don't rely on their web sites to say whether they do or don't.
