Anyone have any information on pedi ortho? The pros, the cons, anything in comparison to the other mainstream fields in ortho (sports / joints). Anyone know what average salaries for pedi0-orthos are? Thanks

so i'm on pedi ortho right now and it's pretty damn nice. i don't know much about salaries and such but here is waht i do know.

pros:

you get to do a little of everything. the guys i'm working with do spine, sports, trauma, foot/ankle, hand, tumor, etc all in kids.

good lifestyle

great patient population and good outcomes b/c kids heal so damn well.

you get really good at casting.

cons:

lots of clinic. some of the attendings here only operate one day a week and have clinic 3-4 days a week. also, lots of the pathology treated doesn't always require surgery and you deal with it in clinic. not a horrible thign but if you love the OR, it's a bit annoying.

all in all i think it's a great subspecialty.

I am just starting intern year next week, but I am planning on a career in Peds Ortho. I did one month of Peds during my 4th year and some research with a Pedi-Pod, and I was really turned on to the field. I agree with the above comments, and here's my 2 cents...

Pros: great patients, good lifestyle, get to deal with the whole body while still being a specialized orthopod, one of the least popular specialties in ortho so easier to get the fellowship that you want

Cons: a lot of clinic and less OR (this may not be such a negative, as this is what allows for the nicer lifestyle), lower end of the pay scale as far as orthopaedic surgeons go (but your kids will surely not be starving), many chronic patients such as Spina Bifida and Cerebral Palsy

Overall, I think it is a great subspecialty and I can't wait to get into it. It is, however, very different from adult orthopaedics and you really have to experience it first hand to know if it is the right field for you.

Hope this helps.....
