“Out of Limbo”: A ReinventMD Initiative to Support Orthopaedic Reapplicants through Strategic Planning, Professional Development, and Community
This is a new initiative supported by the AAOS IDEA Grant focused on supporting unmatched orthopaedic applicants. This physician-led initiative was designed with YOU in mind, because we too have been there...Lost in the Limbo of post match chaos and navigating the path back through the reapplication process. Through this program, you will learn how to process the moment, without denying the discomfort, while also embracing the process. We recognize that this journey can feel isolating, emotionally heavy, and logistically overwhelming but you are
not alone. The work will not be easy, but you do not have to do it alone. As a selected scholar, you will be supported by a structured set of tools, private webinars, and a workbook that will help you prepare for the reapplication process and opportunities to increase awareness around the uniquely challenging experience of reapplying to orthopaedic surgery. You will also receive a scholarship and have the opportunity to attend the 2027 American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Annual Meeting.
Program Purpose:
- Offer a tailored curriculum with practical tools for professional growth (research, LORs, CV building, interview prep)
- Provide community via peer connection, mentorship, and networking opportunities
- Address the emotional and psychological impact of the match process
- Help participants maintain momentum and reinvent their MD for a purpose beyond patient care
- Build a data-driven model to optimize outcomes for reapplicants
