Email is probably the besy way nowadays to contact programs. When I was applying (now about 4 years ago), I sent postcards requesting info to all of the programs that I was interested in and I would say about 75% of them sent me stuff on the program. The other 25% sent me a response saying to look at their web site. That has probably increased in the past four years. The only other real good way is to probably talk to those that are now residents and ask them about their interview experience as we are doing nowon this site

I emailed the 40 programs I am looking at and fully 36 of them replied telling me to checkout their website. Only 4 of 40 actually MAILED information on their program (Pittsburgh, Iowa, Boston University, Indiana).
