Everybody in the midwest knows Kalamazoo is awesome. What other community programs are highly regarded. Which ones excel in:
1) OR time, esp. as 1st assist or better
2) balanced experience (trauma, joints, sports)
3) work hours
4) teaching
5) research availability
6) success of grads- fellowships and jobs
How difficult is it to get into these programs.(scores, honors, research, recommendations) Are AI/subIs a must?

I think just about every community program will excel in OR time/scut ratio, which is why I am hopefully community bound. You should have a balanced experience at most places (minus tumor and maybe spine). Teaching will probably be inferior if you are looking for hard core basic science teaching, but you will get great clinical teaching. Obviously research will be less available when compared to academic programs. These are just some generalizations, I can't give you specifics on programs, but I can name several programs that have great reputations. Kzoo, Akron, Carolinas, Beumont, Grand Rapids, Greenville, and Algeheny.
