ROC: Ortho Chair?
Hey all,
I'm currently a second year med student and very interested in ortho. A lot of you have said that getting a
letter of recommendation from the ortho. chair is crucial. I was just wondering how students get letters from
the chairperson. The chair at my school is not doing any research (clinical or lab), and therefore that route is
pretty much out. How do students who don't do research with the chair (which I'm pretty sure most students
don't get to do) get a letter from the chairperson? Can it be through rotations and
sub-I? I know you guys must be really busy, but I would really appreciate if you could respond whenever you
get a chance. Thank you very much,

In addition to research, you can simply do a rotation/sub-I with the ortho chair or the service he is involved
with. This can be a great way of securing a strong letter. Also, some department chairs will write a
'chairman's' letter which can be a compilation of your ortho evals, comments from residents, and your CV.
Often they will sit down and meet with you before writing the letter. If you can't do research or a
rotation...look into this option.
