Need some advice

I am a middle tier ortho applicant at a med school without a home institution ortho program. I am considering doing aways at HSS and at UCLA. Is it a smart idea to go for these schools (a big reason is for big name LORs)? Any other recommendations? Can anyone tell me some specifics about the programs, especially UCLA?

Also, what elective rotation should I do at these programs, as far as general ortho vs. trauma etc...?
Thanks for the help,

What you'll hear on the interview trail is that the guys at UCLA don't operate enough. I spent a month there on the trauma service and indeed most cases had the attending, chief and at least one junior resident. Having said that, the chief who was headed to Andrews for a sports fellowship was facile in the OR and seemed to know his stuff. There are some major changes that are taking place at UCLA. The entire ortho dept is moving to Santa Monica. A state of the art orthopedic hospital is under construction there, but will not be done for several years- which may overlap w/ your training. Beware that you may not be able to do much at UCLA as a student if you rotate. They just don't have the volume that a USC or UC Davis has. If you do decide to rotate there, Trauma/joints is a good rotation where you can meet Lieberman (hips), Johnson (traama) and Eckhart (tumor).

HSS has a great reputation as an ortho hospital, but may not be the best program from a residency stand point (too many fellows). I agree with what has been said previously, USC and UC Davis are probably better choices for an away rotation.
