The Keck Medical Center of the University of Southern California invites 3rd and 4th year medical students to apply for a one-year research fellowship position in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Section of Sports Medicine starting spring/summer 2018.

This is a year-long full-time position that will provide a highly-motivated applicant with the opportunity to engage in clinical, translational, and basic science research in a productive academic sports medicine environment. This is an excellent opportunity for medical students to strengthen their application for an orthopaedic surgery residency match.

The research fellow will work closely with Dr. Alexander Weber and several other attending surgeons with the sports medicine group. Fellows will be heavily involved in all aspects of the research process including grant writing, IRB application drafting, project design, literature reviews, data collection and analysis, and manuscript/book chapter publication. Basic science projects range from biomechanical modeling of hip and knee pathology to cartilage and soft-tissue studies in animal models. Clinical research will involve maintenance of a growing patient reported outcomes database with virtually limitless opportunities to publish high-level prospective studies.

Our previous fellows have been prolific and future fellows are expected to be highly productive with the opportunity and can expect to produce 10-15 high quality manuscripts for publication with numerous abstracts for presentation at national meetings.
Preference will be given to students with a strong research background, and optimally applicants who have had experience with:

• Statistical analysis using SAS, STATA, or SPSS.
• Bachelors degree in statistics, mathematics, engineering, physics, or health science related field
• Prior experience publishing in peer-reviewed literature
• Strong organizational, communication, and analytical skills
• Familiarity with IRB and animal research regulatory requirements
• Strong skills in using word processing software, electronic medical records, digital radiographic systems, and research databases

This is an exceptional opportunity ideally suited to 3rd and 4th year medical student interested in academic orthopaedics. Fellows will be provided a biweekly stipend as living support during the year.

To apply, email your CV, a brief personal statement, picture, USMLE step 1 score report, and medical school transcript with the subject line, “Orthopaedic Research Fellowship,” to our current fellow, Erik Mayer: erik.mayer@med.usc.edu. We anticipate filling the position by February 2018.

If you have any additional questions, feel free to reach out to Erik Mayer.

Sincerely,

Alexander E. Weber, MD
Assistant Professor
