Position: Orthopaedic Spine Research Fellow
Salary: Unpaid with potential for financial support through Grants currently in process
Health/Dental insurance: Available for purchase through University of Maryland
Where: University of Maryland Medical Center
When: Beginning Spring/Summer 2019
Duration: Academic year 2019-2020

We invite highly motivated current 3rd and 4th year medical students to apply for a one-year research fellowship position in the Spine Division of Departments of Orthopaedics at University of Maryland starting spring/summer 2018. This position is a full-time research fellowship that will provide applicants with significant opportunities for manuscript publications, design and implementation of new research projects, poster presentations at various conferences, networking, and more. This is an excellent opportunity for current medical students to strengthen their applications for a match in an orthopaedic surgery residency. Applicants can expect to produce 7-10 manuscripts for publication, 2-3 manuscripts for first author publication, numerous abstracts/posters presented, and 2-5 book chapters for publication.
You will be one of two research fellows for the Spine Division. You both will work closely on all projects and will be responsible for leading, managing, and developing all research going on in the spine Division. If needed, there is additional support for statistics within the department.
Research topics will be primarily clinical in nature, and will range in nature from smaller institutional retrospective studies to industry sponsored multi-centered prospective studies. All research fellows will work under the direction of Drs. Steven Ludwig, Daniel Gelb, Kelley Banagan, and Eugene Koh.

• Must be extremely organized and detail oriented
• Must be self-motivated
• Strong academic record

Responsibilities and daily activities
Performing literature reviews
Developing research hypotheses
Composing research protocols
Drafting and submitting IRB proposals
Interacting with and recruiting patients in pre-op
Interacting with industry sponsors and other research coordinators at different sites
Collecting, organizing, and analyzing clinical research data
Preparing and submitting results for academic publication and presentation.
