Research Fellowship: Dr. David Landy, MD PhD

Hello,

I am, Dr. David Landy at the University of Kentucky. I am currently seeking a highly motivated medical student, who is interested in pursuing a yearlong clinical research fellowship focused on adult reconstruction (hip and knee replacement).  I am an Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery with training in epidemiology and statistician. My research work focuses around risk stratification and risk factors identification as well as the application of epidemiologic and statistical methods within orthopaedic surgery research.
         The position will allow the applicant to work with residents, fellows, research faculty, and clinical faculty at the University of Kentucky and gain knowledge and experience with respect to the conduct of research as well as increased clinical knowledge. The research fellow will have the opportunity to co-author multiple conference abstracts and publications and would be expected to have an enhanced resume for the Orthopaedic Surgery match. Research fellows are highly encouraged to attend all orthopedic lectures, grand rounds, cadaveric labs, and workshops.

Position duration is about 12-months, approximately May/June 2022 through May/June 2023 though dates can be flexible given the needs of the applicant.

Lexington is a beautiful city situated in the rolling foothills of the bluegrass region of Kentucky. Numerous outdoor activities range from climbing to caving and kayaking, all within an hour’s drive. Lexington also has a rich cultural environment with solid art and music scene. Additionally, Lexington benefits from a very reasonable cost of living and temperate weather. It is a wealthy city supported by the horse and bourbon industry. UK hospital is located next to the large University of Kentucky undergraduate campus.

Job Duties:
1. Hands-on experience collecting patient outcome data in both the clinical setting and via chart review
2. Assist with both prospective and retrospective studies
3. Submission and management of IRB protocol
4. Assist the research coordinators and research faculty on clinical projects in the department
5. Participate in drafting (writing), editing, or submitting projects including abstracts, manuscripts, grants, and patents.

Qualifications:
1. A background in musculoskeletal disorders with a desire to pursue a career in orthopaedic surgery or orthopaedic surgery research
2. Very well organized with good computer skills
3. Good oral and written communication skills
4. Independent and efficient worker
5. Strong scholastic performance
6. Statistical experience or interest is a bonus but not required
