Medical students may elect to take a dedicated “Gap Year” during medical school to focus on research, develop scholarly productivity, and strengthen their residency application. For highly competitive specialties such as Orthopaedic Surgery, research experience and peer-reviewed publications are important components of a successful application.

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine is offering a one-year paid research position for a current U.S. medical student between their third and fourth year of medical school.

This position focuses primarily on clinical research, including:

Opportunities in basic science and laboratory research may also be available depending on applicant interest and departmental needs.

The selected candidate can expect to participate in approximately 10–15 research projects, the majority of which are anticipated to result in peer-reviewed publications and presentations at regional and national meetings.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Completing required research access and authorization processes with UC Health and University of Cincinnati Medical Center
  • Conducting and overseeing informed consent processes as appropriate
  • Managing study-related data collection, including clinical measurements and direct patient data collection
  • Leading patient recruitment efforts and developing strategies to meet enrollment targets
  • Assisting with data analysis and preparation of abstracts, presentations, regulatory reports, and manuscripts
  • Performing advanced data queries and submitting required reports to the Institutional Review Board, Principal Investigator, and/or sponsors
  • Contributing to the development of new study protocols, prospective databases, and departmental research initiatives, including independent design of data collection tools (e.g., tracking logs, schedules, calendars)
