Job Title: Orthopaedic Spine Research Coordinator

Positions: 1

Location: University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore, MD

Dr. Daniel Cavanaugh

Time: Approximately 1 year. Starting date is flexible, but preferably May-June 2020.

Salary: Monthly stipend

Job description: The Spine Division of the Orthopaedics Department at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore is accepting invitations from 3rd year medical students, unmatched 4th year medical students, and recent US medical graduates looking to expand their curriculum and research experience in the field of orthopaedics. The research fellow will work closely with spine attendings and the rest of the research team (fellows, residents, students, and others). This position will provide you with ample opportunities such as:
  • - Strengthen your orthopaedic residency application
  • - Direct guidance and mentorship in research and orthopaedic surgery
  • - Co-author 10 to 15 manuscripts, abstracts, presentations, posters, and/or book chapters, with great opportunity to be a first author
  • - Opportunity to present research at national and international medical conferences
  • - Multiple departmental educational activities: Daily Spine Rounds, Weekly Spine Conferences, Spine Fellow Journal Club, Orthopaedic Grand Rounds, Mortality and Morbidity Conferences, Cadaver lab, Surgical Skills lab, and many others
  • - Networking with residents, fellows, and attending orthopaedic surgeons

  • Job duties:
  • - Manage all clinical trials and ongoing studies
  • - Conduct monthly research meetings updating status of ongoing projects
  • - Performing literature reviews
  • - Developing research hypotheses
  • - Composing research protocols
  • - Drafting and submitting IRB proposals
  • - Patient recruitment and informed consent
  • - Interacting with industry sponsors and other research coordinators at different sites
  • - Collecting, organizing, and analyzing clinical research data
  • - Preparing and submitting results for academic publication and presentation.

  • Qualifications:
  • - Innate interest in orthopaedics and treatment of musculoskeletal disease
  • - Strong academic record
  • - Excellent communication and organizational skills to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • - Ability to work independently and efficiently
  • - Previous experience in research and statistical analysis is preferable but not necessary
