One additional one-year research internship position has just become available at Shock Trauma. Please apply by April 15, 2018.

Position: Research Internship

Duration: 12-months

Compensation: $30,000 stipend

Where: R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center/University of Maryland School of Medicine. The Shock Trauma Center is a pioneer in trauma care and high-volume center that sees over 2,000 orthopaedic patients per year. The Division of Orthopaedic Traumatology has a comprehensive research program with 19 prospective clinical trials, 9 dedicated research personnel, and extramural funding from DoD, PCORI, OTA, and OREF, as well as a rich collaborative relationship with cutting-edge public health researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and a strong presence at national meetings.

Who: Under the direction of Dr. Robert O’Toole and Dr. Gerard Slobogean, research interns participate in weekly mentorship meeting and will be involved in large, multinational clinical trials at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center.

When: Approx. start July. Some flexibility on case-by-case basis

The Division of Orthopaedic Traumatology is seeking dedicated 3rd or 4th year US medical students who are interested in a yearlong clinical research internship to augment their orthopaedic residency application and provide solid foundation for a future career in academic orthopaedics. All previous medical students have matched into orthopaedic residency.

The program will also review applications from outstanding baccalaureate graduates seeking to improve their research experience prior to a medical school application.

Duties of the research intern will include:
-Management of enrollment and follow up of clinical trials
-Collaboration with Orthopaedic residents, fellows and attendings on retrospective projects
- Submission of protocols to the IRB
-Basic Statistical analysis of data
- Drafting and submitting abstracts and manuscripts to conferences and journals (e.g. JOT, JBJS, JAAOS, CORR)

Goals/Opportunities:
- Opportunity to conduct clinical research and strengthen their application orthopedic residency
-Mentorship with leading academic trauma orthopaedic surgeons
-Ability to be 1st author on all papers that he/she significantly contributes to
-Networking opportunities with residents, fellows, and attendings
- Ample opportunities to attend education opportunities: Orthopaedic Grand Rounds, Conferences, Journal Clubs, Cadaver Labs, surgical skills etc.
- Opportunities to present research at academic conferences
