The Hip Preservation Center at Midwest Orthopaedics of Rush invites applications from 3rd year medical students for a wonderful year-long Clinical Research Fellowship opportunity. The purpose of this all-inclusive program is to give students who may be interested in pursuing careers in orthopaedic surgery the opportunity to immerse themselves in academic research and strengthen their application for the Orthopaedic Residency Match.

Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush is nationally recognized as a leader in comprehensive orthopedic services and in fact, the orthopedic program at Rush University Medical Center is ranked as one of the top 10 programs in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. The research fellow will work directly under the mentorship of Dr. Shane J. Nho, an internationally recognized hip surgeon, and will function as the research coordinator for any new or ongoing projects. The fellow will also work with several other world-renowned surgeons as well.

Responsibilities and daily activities include:

• Developing research hypotheses and performing literature reviews
• Composing research protocols and submitting IRB proposals
• Interacting with, recruiting, and examining patients in clinic for clinical projects
• Creating abstracts, posters, and lectures to be giving at national meetings
• Preparing and submitting results for academic publication
• The position also provides the opportunity to be mentored in a clinical setting
• All Research Fellows are invited to attend Grand Rounds, Resident Didactics and lectures
• The current fellow is involved in 10 - 15 projects at any given time and has produced several first authored abstracts and manuscripts.


Application Process


Applicants will be interviewed and selected based on research experience and medical school performance, as well as enthusiasm and interest. Excellent organizational and communication skills are highly desired. The chosen applicant typically begins the summer after third-year rotations are completed and works for one calendar year. The position is funded.
