UConn Musculoskeletal Institute and Orthopedics & Sports Medicine at UConn Health in Farmington, Connecticut is searching for two motivated medical students to participate in biomechanical and clinical research for a 1 year position for the 2023-2024 academic year. 

Position Title: Research Fellow
Positions: 2 (ideally one 3rd year and one unmatched 4th year medical student)
Duration: 1 year (flexible start/end date)
Where: UConn Musculoskeletal Institute and Orthopedics & Sports Medicine at UConn Health
Mentor: Dr. Cory Edgar, MD, PhD
Stipend: $10,000 per year 

The research fellows will participate in the planning, IRB submission, study coordination, data collection and analysis, abstract and manuscript preparation and submission, as well as presentation of projects at national conferences. The research fellows are also encouraged to participate in educational activities within the department of orthopedic surgery including daily conferences and journal clubs, as well as dedicated exposure to the clinic and the operating room. Also if desired and able, the 4th year applicant is encouraged to take two months off in the fall to attend one orthopedic surgery away rotations and one rotation at UConn if allowable by their home institution in order to further build connections and increase chances of matching to a residency program.  

Duties of the research coordinator will include:
  • Coordination of multiple research projects across all orthopedic subspecialties
  • Statistical analysis of data
  • Co-authoring multiple papers, abstracts, and textbook chapters
  • Support Orthopedic Resident and Fellow research projects
 Specific Prerequisites and Characteristics of the coordinator should include
  • Current medical student in good standing who is either unmatched or between their 3rd and 4th year of school who is intending to pursue a career in orthopedic surgery
  • Prior research experience is preferred but not required, familiarity with statistical analysis is also a bonus but not required.
  • Must be organized, detail oriented, and motivated
 Benefits of the position:
  • The fellow should expect to have at MINIMUM 5 publications and personally present 2-3 projects at national conferences
  • Fellow will have the opportunity to be first author on all papers he/she significantly contributes to
  • For the third year student, the year will be structured into 2-3 month blocks in which 2 days per week the fellow is assigned to work with a specific attending surgeon in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery in both the clinic and the operating room to build exposure to different fields of orthopedics as well as develop relationships for future letters of recommendation.
  • For the 4th year student, this opportunity will also allow for dedicated clinical exposure within the UConn department of orthopedic surgery if they wish, as well as attend two away rotations if they are able.
  • Support of multiple full-time research staff including a biomechanics lab manager, biomechanics research engineer, director of research at 
  • Opportunity to gain insight from multiple faculty regarding the application process, letters of recommendation, and strengthening the applicant’s candidacy for orthopedic residency
