The Spine Division of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Emory University School of Medicine is excited to offer a funded, one-year Research Fellow position for highly motivated medical students or medical school graduates to join our team for the 2026–2027 academic year. This position is designed for those pursuing a dedicated research or gap year to strengthen their orthopaedic surgery residency applications, with a particular interest in spine surgery. We are unable to sponsor visa applications at this time.
Competitive applicants will demonstrate a strong interest in academic orthopaedics, excellent organizational skills, and a commitment to clinical outcomes research. The fellow will work directly with Emory spine division faculty, with their primary point of contact being Dr. Brian Goh, MD, PhD. The fellow will be actively involved in high-impact clinical research spanning database studies, retrospective and prospective studies, systematic reviews, and imaging-based projects focused on spinal pathology.
Responsibilities:
- Manage and coordinate multiple ongoing spine research projects
- Prepare and submit IRB protocols, amendments, and continuing reviews
- Screen, recruit, and enroll patients for prospective clinical studies
- Perform chart review, data abstraction, and database management
- Perform statistical data analysis (SPSS, R, SAS, or similar)
- Draft and submit abstracts and manuscripts to peer-reviewed journals
- Participate in monthly research meetings, case conferences, and weekly clinics
- Collaborate closely with residents, medical students, fellows, and faculty to advance projects
- Submit and present research at regional, national, and international orthopaedic and spine meetings
