Medical students may choose to take a “Gap-Year” during medical school training to do research and produce publications that improve their CV, and position as an applicant for highly competitive Residency Training Programs such as Orthopedic Surgery that consider research activity and publications an important part of the application process.

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Cincinnati, College of Medicine is offering a one-year research position for a current US medical student between their third and fourth year of medical school. The position is focused on clinical research and involves retrospective studies, database studies, prospective studies, and randomized clinical trials – however, basic science and laboratory research are also possible. The successful applicant can expect to be involved in approximately ten to fifteen projects, the majority of which will progress to publication and presentation at regional and national meetings.

Specific responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
• Complete the application for Research Access and Authorizations with UC Health and University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
• Oversee and conduct the informed consent process on studies as appropriate.
• Manage data collection specific to research studies including but not limited to the performance of measurements for applicable studies, collection of clinical data from patients directly, and manage the performance of all other duties as put forth in the protocol.
• Spearhead efforts to meet patient enrollment targets. To that end, develop and implement various recruitment strategies.
• Compile and assist in analyzing data in preparation for a presentation, sponsor/regulatory agency, or publications with the help of the principal investigator
• Perform advanced data queries when needed. Provide timely reports to Institutional Review Board, Principal Investigator, and/or sponsor for each research project.
• Participate in the development of new protocols, prospective databases and new initiatives taken on by the department. This may include independent design of databases and tools to facilitate data collection as required for specific projects (calendars, schedules, tracking logs).

This is a paid 12-month stipend through the University of Cincinnati.
