It's time a thread was started to address the specific topic of post-interview "activity" and what different programs are known to do. Which programs really "want" to get a thank-you letter? Whic programs need you to come for a second-look in order for you to match there? Which programs don't care? Which send letters? Who makes calls? etc...

Facts are good. Rumors are fine. Let's hear it all.

oh... I'm not sure about top 8... you might be right. it could be top 15 or so. I don't think it matters too much, though. top 20 might be pushing it, especially coming from a program like UPenn.

UVA doesn't have their 6 year spot out of the match. They just match everyone and let the residents decide who wants to do 5 and who wants 6. I got a call from their chair but it wasn't an outside of the match offer.
