The Mayo Clinic Department of Orthopedic Surgery invites second- and third-year medical students to apply for a one-year clinical research fellowship position starting in the Spring of 2023 with the Orthopedic Surgery Artificial Intelligence Lab (OSAIL). The start date is flexible between May and June depending on the applicant’s academic calendar. This is an excellent opportunity for highly-motivated individuals to strengthen their application for the Orthopedic Surgery Residency Match. The research fellow will be expected to work on numerous projects with several investigators; therefore, excellent organizational and communication skills are paramount. The research fellow will work closely with Dr. Sanchez, Dr. Larson, Dr. Wyles, Dr. Taunton, and several other Mayo Clinic orthopedic faculty. Duties include idea creation, project design, scientific literature search, image annotation, data cleaning, data collection, statistical analysis, figure creation, and manuscript preparation. Previous experience with artificial intelligence research is not required but will be considered a bonus. In addition, the fellow will also have the opportunity to practice surgical skills and enhance their orthopedic and research knowledge through working in the cadaver lab with residents/attendings, taking part in an online biostatistics course, and attending weekly didactic sessions in various disciplines within orthopedics to develop a strong fund of knowledge.
