But seriously, I would either go with nice jeans and a button down or some slacks and a button down, depending on the place and what the email says.

The ones that I went to, people were wearing a mix. I wore jeans and a collar shirt - I think that's probably appropriate. Others wore slacks and a dress shirt. I think it's all about what you feel comfortable in...

Sorry I just PM''ed somebody ....so what I said was if it says Cocktail party...I think nothing less than slacks and button up....cocktail is suppossed to be dressing well and impressing. Technically you are never suppossed to wear jeans to a cocktail

i was just at an interview where they had a dinner (not cocktail) and people wore jeans and button ups
