A year ago I fractured my ankle and had a very slow recovery. Everything finally seemed to be working fine but now it's starting to stiffen up and hurt quite a bit. Am I going to have problems like this for the rest of my life?

Still you're getting recovery from ankle surgery then its a big issue.
You should boost your surgery recovery by using RICE (Rest, ICE, Compression and Elevation) method. Applying the RICE method can speed up your recovery. RICE is an effective recovery method, which reduces swelling and pain, regardless if it’s for the following conditions:

Toenail issues
Flat feet
Bunions
Hammer or claw toes
Plantar fasciitis.

Everything is worthless if you don't know how to use. Please refer blow link for how to use RICE method for speed up recovery in foot surgery.
