The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine is offering a one-year fellowship in orthopaedic research. The fellowship runs from May 2018 through May 2019. The fellow would manage 10 or more clinical research projects under one-on-one mentorship from orthopaedic faculty at the University of Cincinnati. The fellow would be expected to submit and present abstracts at annual meetings and prepare manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication. This is a paid post-doctoral 12-month position through the University of Cincinnati with full-time benefits.

The clinical responsibilities are limited to seeing study patients in the hospital as well as in the clinic. The fellow is encouraged to attend conferences, Grand Rounds and journal club in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. The fellow would be encouraged to participate in projects in all divisions of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Activities would include research planning and design, data collection and analysis, and manuscript preparation and submission. For the self-directed, motivated individual, this can be a very productive year. In addition to improving your research skills in an academic environment, the goal of the program is to have the fellow, with full-time research experience and strong letters of recommendation, successfully match into an Orthopaedic Surgery Residency position.

The deadline for application is Thursday, March 15, 2018 at 12 p.m. This program is limited to U.S. medical school graduates.

If you have any questions regarding this position, you may email the current fellow, Adam Schumaier, MD adam.schumaier@uc.edu. To apply, send your CV, USMLE board scores, and a brief statement of interest (250 words or fewer) to: Shelley Hess, Program Manager at shelley.hess@uc.edu.

Hi everyone, I'm Adam (the current fellow at Cincinnati). I want to share some additional information about the program. Also, please do not hesitate to send me any questions (adam.schumaier@uc.edu)

This is a fully established research position that has successfully matched re-applicants for 9 years in a row. You will learn to be a self-sufficient researcher, which is a great opportunity that you can really take advantage of. I began work here last may and so far have 10 peer-reviewed publications, 1 grant, and 4 book chapters with many more manuscripts that are still under review / planned (this is not including abstracts, presentations, etc.).

The pay is very reasonable (around $45,000 for the year w/ full benefits), and there are opportunities to present and attend meetings throughout the year. The mentorship is excellent, and you have the opportunity to work one-on-one with the faculty. The department is involved in several multi-center trials and study groups which provides a great way to network.

The number of interviews after reapplication has been highly variable, ranging from 6 to 40+. The average is probably around 15-20, but you should expect to get more interviews than you did during the first application cycle.

Also, Cincinnati is a great city to be in. Living downtown is very affordable. Many of us are within blocks of each other, and there is plenty to do (concerts, restaurants, bars, parks, etc.). Again, please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!
