The mission of the Global Spine Research Initiative (GSRI) at UC Irvine is to address global disparities in spine surgical care through research and education. The GSRI offers a one-year opportunity for exceptional third and fourth-year US medical students interested in orthopaedic surgery, global health, and spine surgery. The UC Irvine Global Spine Research Fellow can expect to participate in 20-30 research projects and collaborate with principal investigators both domestically and internationally with active projects in the US, Africa, Latin America and Asia. UC Irvine faculty will provide mentorship for the residency application process as well as a career in orthopaedic surgery. There will be a monthly stipend of $1500.00.

 Application requirements include:
  • CV
  • Personal Statement (one page) describing your interest in orthopaedics and global health
  • Letter of Recommendation
    • Reference - Please provide name and email
  • Unofficial Medical School Transcript
  • Step 1 and Step 2 scores (if completed)
Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until January 15th, 2025, and interviews will be conducted with qualified candidates. Acceptance notifications will be sent by February 1, 2025. The research year will start on July 1, 2025.
