Program Review

Staff / Faculty / Chairman
Dr. Gregory Hill is the PD trained in hands/upper extremity. Very nice guy who loves to pimp you in the OR but he's not being malignant. He really wants you to read, read, read and teaches a ton. He is very approachable and all the residents love him. He took over the program a couple years ago and the residents have specifically come out and said that the program is a million times better already.

Other docs you'll interact with during audition includes Chonko(Joints), Tharp(Spine), and Jackson(Joints). Trauma, Peds, Onc, etc are done at outside hospitals so I didn't have a chance to meet them.
Didactics / Teaching
The residents are trying to change the culture there. In past years, there was ZERO didactics but that has changed. There are weekly fracture conferences, resident lectures, and OITE reviews among others.
Operating Experience
Tons...I felt the biggest PLUS about this program was its operating experience. Since PGY-1 you'll be in the OR a ton. From what I saw, you get to do a whole lot starting second year in terms of leading the case while the attending guides you.
Clinic Experience
Each attending has clinic 1-2x/week so residents are routinely scheduled at a certain clinic. It was the right amount of clinic time with most of your time spent in the OR.
Research Opportunities
Didn't see a lot of research opportunities.
Residents
VERY VERY VERY helpful, friendly, knowledgeable. Probably the best group of residents I have run into so far during my clinical rotations. They love to teach and they keep each other accountable. Really good group of guys outside of the hospital who are easy to talk to and hang out with.
Lifestyle
Balanced. Call was from home during my audition rotation. Most residents are married with children and it looked like they had adequate time to see their families.
Location / Housing
Pretty barren area but there is a good area for housing nearby.
Limitations
Area. I'm used to socal but then again you're gonna be in the OR most of your days. And plus Cleveland is a short drive away which allows your to take a day visit there on the weekends.
Overall Rotation Experience / Conclusion
Very good experience. The most I have been able to do in a surgical rotation. Not overwhelming. I felt it was a good place for residency especially if you have a family. All of the residents seem to go on into fellowships. Last year's chief got into a sports medicine fellowship at the Cleveland clinic which speaks for itself. Probably going to be one of my top choices when it comes time to rank programs.

Qualification

I rotated as a medical student at this program
Date of Rotation
July 2012
