Diamond in the rough

Program Review

Staff / Faculty / Chairman
There is a small but devoted group of attendings who are all great. There is a nice mix of younger attending and veterans who are all enthusiastic about teaching. The attending/resident relationship is very good and non-malignant. The program director Dr. Cochran is fantastic and is very well known and active in the DO ortho community.
Didactics / Teaching
We have conference every morning from 6-7am. We have residents lecturing, journal club, fracture conference, OITE review, and other learning modalities. Out of all the programs I rotated through as a student, I was most impressed with this programs dedication to education.
Operating Experience
Early and often. As a smaller program, we only have one resident on each service. As a junior you are preparing for cases and operating from the beginning; staff allow you to do as much in the case as is appropriate (and commensurate with your preparation) but you are rarely fighting off a chief. Have spine, sports, foot/ankle, hand, and general guys. Won't see too many DO programs with that much diversity all in one place.
Clinic Experience
We have resident clinic Wed. afternoon and Friday morning. You have the option to do clinic with the attending on your service for extra clinic, but most chose to head to the OR.
Research Opportunities
Not the strong suit of the program but there are opportunities if you want it. The program is affiliated with OUCOM and they can provide extra resources to help out with projects.
Residents
A great group! Very tight knit. Everyone gets along great. Nice mix of married and single. We all hang out a lot outside of work. Do have a women in the program.
Lifestyle
Intern year is not bad at all (no general house call and one month of house nights). PGY2 year is rough (just like everywhere else). PGY3 is better. Call is very front loaded, so chief years are pretty nice. Forth year is spent out of the area (6 months of peds and 6 months of trauma). Can do these rotations at a pick of great places.
Location / Housing
It is cheap to live in the Massillon/Canton area. There are some very nice areas. We are an hour from downtown Cleveland and 30 minutes from Akron. This area is no social hot-spot.... but you can still find some fun.
Limitations
The size is both strength and weakness; research needs work. Do spend fourth year out of town.
Overall Rotation Experience / Conclusion
I really love it here. Our operative experience is outstanding, and we match into great fellowships despite the fact that no one has heard of our program (our chief last year is in Birmingham, AL with James Andrews this year). I highly recommend applicants rotate with us and see what we are all about!

Qualification

I am a current resident of this program.
Date of Rotation
2008
