Program Review

Staff / Faculty / Chairman
Dougherty is a Trauma attending and PD. Very involved in residents it seemed. Carpenter is Sports attending and chairman - very nice guy.
Didactics / Teaching
Daily conferences in the morning 630-7 or 645-715. Grandrounds on Thursdays at 7. Trauma conferences before grand rounds. Lots of didactics and great teachings. Also special days off for conferences or meetings
Operating Experience
Very good. Great attending to resident ratio. Interns on Joints even get to work 1 on 1 with attending. More operating as you get more senior. East Ann Arbor is separate UofM facility for outpatient ORs - sweet turnover time. Operate there for some Sports, hand, and foot/ankle.
Clinic Experience
Clinic is clinic - more as an intern and junior resident. Seniors/chiefs mainly operate
Research Opportunities
Extremely good. Have 2 months off as 3rd year to continue longitudinal research project that you start as a 2nd year. Lots of basic science if that's your thing or can choose to do clinical research (most residents do that).
Residents
Friendly and down to earth. Both married and single. Involved in intramural sports. Good social scene.
Lifestyle
Good. Intern year is supposed to be great (3 months ortho, 1 radiology, 1 rheumatology, 1 anesthesia, the rest are gen surg). Night float for trauma (2 months as PGY3). Home floor call for in-house patients (intern and pgy2 years) - usually q5 or 6.
Location / Housing
Ann Arbor is sweet. Great for football. Decent downtown nightlife. Isn't NYC but there is always enough going on.
Limitations
Program is increasing this year to 8 interns. Don't know how that will affect upcoming classes. However - plans are to increase rotations to include St. Joe's (private hospital 10-15 min away), supposed to do hand and sports there as well. Should be good as it will provide good exposure for private practice.
Overall Rotation Experience / Conclusion
Awesome program - It is underrated in my opinion - I would consider it a top tier program as I have rotated and interviewed at most of the other traditional "top ranked" programs.

Qualification

I rotated as a medical student at this program
