New Delhi: Is 3D printing the future model for performing complex orthopaedic, spinal and reconstructive surgeries? Doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) believe it is. They have set up a 3D printing facility in the hospital and say it can help reduce complications significantly, apart from aiding in difficult cases.

Using 3D software and a printer, the surgeons can covert a CT scan of a damaged bone into a physical model. This can be of great assistance to doctors because even a minor mistake or miscalculation in a spine surgery can cause paralysis or deformity.
