Research Project Manager will serve as a strong operational dyad partner to the Vice Chair of Development (VCD) for the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the UMMC campus. They will have oversight and leadership of the clinical research activities at the UMMC campus in conjunction with the VCD including budgetary management, guide and supervise a research staff of 3.0 FTE on operational duties from studies to manuscripts. Provide knowledge and help as needed around clinical research.

Required Qualifications:

BA/BS plus at least 5 years of experience or advanced degree plus 3 years of experience or a combination of related education and work experience to equal 9 years

Demonstrated ability to adhere to Good Clinical Practice (GCP), FDA Regulations, HIPAA

Previous experience with direct patient contact

Excellent critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills

Excellent written and verbal communication

Preferred Qualifications:

Understanding of University research infrastructure, services, and resources

Demonstrated ability to adhere to university policy and procedures, particularly relating to human subjects and secure study files


Job Description:

Operational Management 40%

Create guidelines and policies to provide structure to research functions in collaboration with Chairperson.

In collaboration with the Chairperson, enforce compliance of policies and guidelines within department.

Oversees operational processes and identifies and implements process improvement as needed.

Manage workloads of research staff for appropriate staffing levels.

Assessing and analyzing research budget to minimize expense and optimize utilization.

Supervision of the clinical research team at UMMC including regular scheduled meetings, goal setting, annual reviews and performance issues.

Research Project Management 35%

Oversight of clinical research studies in conjunction with the study coordinator.

Management of day-to-day relationships with PI’s and coordinators of clinical research studies.

Work with clinical research coordinators to track time for studies.

Management of study subject enrollment and reporting out quarterly to the Chairperson and Department Head.

Oversight of clinical research budgets for management and accuracy.

Collaborate with research entities within the University as needed, deciding when to purchase support from the University vs utilizing department resources.


Research Strategy and Planning 25%

Networking and leveraging ISO's/UMN-centric services and PI's as department representative including seeking out new resources and collaborative opportunities.

Collaborate with the education research team on requests for assistance of research staff help.

Educate department on opportunities/resources.

In collaboration of the Chairperson, maintain quarterly research newsletter and tool kit.

Participation with Chairperson on strategy plans around clinical research.
