The Benjamin Fox Orthopedic Research Scholar Award promotes clinical research by giving extraordinary U.S. medical students the opportunity to investigate pertinent topics in clinical orthopedic research at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).

This funded “year-out” scholar program is unique because it was specifically designed for students who are interested in pursuing a career in orthopedic surgery. The successful candidate will dedicate a year to clinical research with CHOP orthopedic surgeons before either the third or fourth year of medical school.

The Ben Fox Orthopaedic Fellowship is a funded year-out research position designed for 3rd year medical students destined for a career in orthopaedic surgery. The goal is to launch the careers of tomorrow’s leaders in our field.

There are three components to the program: research, clinical exposure, and mentoring. For the research focus, the Ben Fox fellows take on several projects, prospective and retrospective, single center and multi-center, some of which were started prior to their arrival, and some of which will begin during their year.  Research is designed to answer questions and solve problems in the areas of pediatric orthopaedic trauma, sports medicine, spine, hip and hand disorders, patient safety, healthcare quality and value, as well as medical economics.

CHOP is internationally recognized for its pioneering work in pediatric orthopedic patient care, education, and basic and clinical research and CHOP physicians have pioneered many orthopedic surgical procedures and devices.

Our physicians are internationally renowned for their skill in treating spinal deformities, malignant and benign tumors, disorders of the hand, elbow, hip, knee, ankle and foot, sports and traumatic injuries, as well as a full spectrum of congenital disorders.

Eligible students can apply by visiting the CHOP Orthopaedic website located at In this section, an application can be downloaded and either filled out by hand or completed electronically and submitted to Dr. John Flynn in the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery at CHOP. Detailed directions can be found on the application. We will accepting applications on a rolling basis starting Oct 1 until Nov 15.
