Salary: Yes, $30,000 - $35,000 depending on previous research experience

Dr. Alan T. Blank is seeking an ambitious medical student (between Third and Fourth Year) who is interested in pursuing a year-long clinical research fellowship at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL. Dr. Blank is an Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and works with the renowned Division of Orthopaedic Oncology alongside Dr. Steven Gitelis and Dr. Matthew W. Colman. This unique position will allow the research assistant to work closely with residents, fellows, and faculty at Rush, gaining exposure in orthopaedic oncology as well as general orthopaedic surgery.  

Prerequisites for the position include:

- Ability to start on campus within the recommended time frame

- Successful completion of Third year prior to start date

- Strong motivation for a career in orthopaedic surgery

- Evident interest in research and strong academic record

- MUST be extremely organized and detail oriented

- MUST have strong communication skills

- MUST be able to self-manage and work independently

- MUST be able to work efficiently with clinical staff and multidisciplinary team

- Experience with statistical analysis and/or coding is highly recommended 

Fellowship responsibilities include:

- Coordination of all (30 +) of the principal investigator’s research projects including both clinical and basic science studies. 

- Maintaining weekly surgical case logs and enrolling patients into the research database.

- Drafting/submitting/updating protocols within the IRB.

- Participating in biweekly research meetings with Dr. Blank, as well as weekly resident education and multidisciplinary Sarcoma conferences.

- Presentation of weekly project updates at aforementioned conferences.

- Data entry into EMR platforms and upload of procedure documents to electronic platforms.

- Collection of intra-operative data and follow-up with patients in clinic and/or by phone.

- Analysis of data from internal or national databases using statistical software (will have access to SPSS and STATA).

- Drafting/editing/production of orthopaedic oncology/orthopaedic surgery manuscripts, abstracts, and book chapters, along with preparation of posters/presentations for conferences.

- Interface and coordination of projects with attendings, fellows, residents, and students alike.

- Dr. Blank fully expects his research fellow to match into Orthopaedic Surgery at one of their preferred residency programs and will help the candidate throughout the match process.
