POSITION HAS BEEN FILLED: 2020-21 U of UTAH Pediatric and Adult Sports Medicine Research Fellowship - Dr. Stephen Aoki

Dr. Stephen Aoki invites 3rd and 4th year medical students interested in orthopaedic surgery to apply for a one-year sports medicine research fellowship.  This is a paid position focused on pediatric and adult hip and knee research.

Dr. Stephen K. Aoki specializes in the surgical treatment of pediatric, adolescent, and adult sports injuries of the hip and knee. Dr. Aoki serves as team physician for University of Utah Gymnastics and University of Utah Football. He serves as Chair of the University of Utah Residency Selection Committee.  

Current research is focused on both pediatric and adult sports medicine, primarily related to hip and knee pathology.  Research includes clinical, biomechanical, and basic science projects. Please refer to the following link for a list of previous research projects: U of U: Aoki Academic Website

As the research assistant, you will be responsible for managing and organizing multiple projects, efficiently following them to completion.  We are looking for a socially intelligent, motivated, self-driven, trustworthy individual to fill this position.

Position: Research Assistant (Full-time paid position)

Duration: ~June 2020-May 2021 (optional 2nd year)

Location: University of Utah Orthopaedic Center/Primary Children’s Hospital. Salt Lake City, UT.

Requirements: 

  • - MS3 or MS4 students with a strong interest in orthopaedic research and a planned career in orthopaedic surgery.
  • - Prior research and statistical analysis experience preferred
  • - Ability to work independently and complete tasks in an efficient manner

Responsibilities:

  • - You will be expected to manage multiple research projects and organize and maintain all aspects of the projects and follow them to completion (assist in data collection, write/submit manuscripts).You will work closely with research faculty, fellows, residents, statisticians, and research coordinators.
  • - You will be responsible for organizing and presenting ongoing research updates at weekly meetings
  • - Collecting patient reported outcome data
  • - Assisting in preparing PowerPoint Presentations, Website Educational Material

  • - Be able to read and critically analyze medical literature
  • - Be comfortable with data collection, scientific writing and submission of manuscripts

  • - Opportunities to participate in surgical procedures
  • - While this is a research assistant position in sports medicine, I would like this opportunity to be one that exposes you to all aspects of orthopaedic surgery. My expectation is that you also attend orthopaedic grand rounds, sports medicine/trauma subspecialty conferences, journal club, and resident conferences in order to help improve your overall knowledge in the specialty.This is a great opportunity.
