NYU Langone Orthopedic Surgery – Virtual Visiting Medical Student Rotation

For a number of years, visiting away rotations at NYU Langone Orthopedics have been an important part of how medical students applying to our orthopedic residency training program have been evaluated. Participating in a visiting rotation at NYU has allowed interested students to get a first-hand account of the training environment, our faculty’s dedication to resident education and the breadth and depth of clinical experiences provided at our 7 clinical training sites. Additionally, the away rotation has allowed our faculty to assess each participating student’s knowledge base, clinical skills and ability to work as part of the orthopedic team.

As is true of many large, academic medical centers across the United States who are following the recommendations of the AAMC, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, visiting away rotations at NYU Langone Orthopedics are currently unavailable. In response, we have developed a virtual visiting medical student rotation for students who are interested in learning more about our residency training program. The program will run monthly from July through December of 2020.

Students who are accepted for participation in the 4 week NYU Langone Orthopedic Surgery Virtual Visiting Medical Student Rotation will:
1. Participate in our weekly Wednesday morning academic conference which includes 3 hour-long lectures on topics in Orthopedic Surgery, Orthopedic Basic Science and the Practice of Orthopedic Medicine
2. Participate in our weekly team-based conferences including indications reviews in adult reconstruction and spine surgery, case-based didactics in sports medicine and shoulder and elbow surgery, topic reviews in hand surgery, pediatric orthopedics and orthopedic trauma.
3. Participate in weekly medical student specific journal clubs
4. Participate in weekly medical student specific didactic lectures
5. Have the opportunity to get involved with ongoing research projects
6. Have the opportunity to present a 20 minute presentation on an orthopedic topic of their choice
7. Be paired with both a faculty advisor and orthopedic resident contact to better understand the benefits of our training program and help navigate the residency application process
