Position: Orthopaedic Trauma Research Fellowship

The Division of Orthopaedic Traumatology is seeking highly qualified 3rd or 4th year US medical students who are interested in a year-long clinical research fellowship to augment their orthopaedic surgery residency application and provide a solid foundation for a future career in academic orthopaedics. All previous medical students participating in the program have successfully matched into an orthopaedic surgery residency (link to Program Brochure).

Note: The program will also review applications from outstanding baccalaureate graduates seeking to improve their research experience prior to a medical school application.

Duration: 12-months (with a possibility of a second year)

Compensation: $30,000 stipend

Where: R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center/University of Maryland School of Medicine. The Shock Trauma Center is a pioneer in trauma care and one of the highest volume orthopaedic trauma groups - performing over 4,000 surgeries per year. You will work within the Division of Orthopaedic Traumatology’s comprehensive research program that is currently running over 15 high-quality prospective clinical trials, with over $30 million of extramural funding from the DoD, PCORI, OTA, and OREF. Most of the work is in orthopaedic clinical trials and many of our projects are in collaboration with the cutting-edge public health researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (www.metrc.org). We typically submit 30 to 40 projects at our national meetings and you can be a part of many of these projects.

Who: You will join our group of 12 full-time research staff that typically includes 4 or 5 other one-year research fellows. You will work in close collaboration with our full-time research staff and under the direction of orthopaedic trauma surgeons Dr. Robert O’Toole and Dr. Gerard Slobogean, and interact frequently with the entire orthopaedic faculty in clinical and educational settings.

When: Approx. start July. Some flexibility on a case-by-case basis.


Duties of the Research Fellow Include:
-Management of enrollment and follow-up of patients in clinical trials
-Collaboration with orthopaedic residents, fellows and attendings on retrospective projects
-Submission of protocols to the IRB
-Basic statistical analysis of data
-Drafting and submitting abstracts and manuscripts to conferences and journals (e.g. JOT, JBJS, JAAOS, CORR)

Goals/Opportunities:
-Strengthen your orthopaedic surgery residency application
-Participate in weekly mentorship and research education meetings with academic orthopaedic trauma surgeons
-Conduct crucial portions of large, multinational clinical trials
-Fellows should expect at least 5-10 publications and abstract submissions depending on the individual’s motivation and work ethic
-Ability to be the first author on all papers that he/she significantly contributes to
-Opportunities to present research abstracts at major orthopaedic conferences
-Networking opportunities with residents, fellows, and attendings
-Ample opportunities to attend all surgical educational activities: Daily Orthopaedic Trauma Rounds, Orthopaedic Grand Rounds, Orthopaedic Trauma Conferences, Morbidity & Mortality Conferences, Journal Club, Cadaver Labs, and Surgical Skills Labs
-Numerous opportunities to observe surgical procedures

How long will it take for my apply to be submitted? I'm on writing a term research now and have too little time to complete it. I'm not considering the fact that I can contact an essay writing service for completing the theoretical.
