Rush Spine Research Fellowship - Dr. Howard An

Dr. An invites a rising 4th year medical student to apply for a year-long clinical spine research fellowship at Rush University Medical Center. This position will awarded to a medical student who demonstrates a strong interest in orthopaedics and is a competitive future candidate for a residency in orthopaedic surgery.

As the research fellow, duties will include:
- Developing research hypotheses/protocols and coordinate multiple studies
- Drafting and submitting IRB proposals
- Interacting with and recruiting patients in clinic and operating room
- Collecting, organizing, and analyzing (statistical) clinical research data
- Preparing and submitting results for academic publication and presentation.
- Video editing of surgical techniques
- Writing and editing book chapters and textbooks

Term: 1 calendar year
- Location: Spine Department, Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush University Medical Center
- Dates: Beginning May-June 2018
- Salary: Full salaried position
- Faculty Mentor: Dr. Howard An, Professor and Morton International Endowed Chair. He is an accomplished clinician-scientist with over 300 peer-reviewed journal publications, Past President of the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine (ISSLS), former Kappa Delta Award Winner and was head of the Division of Spine Surgery at RUSH for 14 years. His research interests have focused on spine degeneration and pain.

- Motivated to pursue a career in orthopaedic surgery
- Detail oriented and very organized; able to self-manage
- Has a proven background ant interest in research activities
