MEETING A DIRE NEED
Your expertise and experience can save lives and improve the health of one of the most needy and underserved populations in the world—the Liberian people. A post-conflict country now at peace, Liberia relies on the generosity of foreign physicians who come to serve and practice in a place where they are sorely needed. There is a severe shortage of qualified physicians in Liberia, where there is only one doctor for every 50,000 people. That means the Liberian people have access to only 1% of the per-capita medical expertise Americans enjoy, because in the US, the same ratio is about 1:500.

For want of skilled physicians, preventable and treatable diseases lead to very high mortality rates and keep many families trapped in a cycle of poverty. Liberia’s maternal mortality rate, to give just one example, ranks among the worst in Africa and the world, estimated at 994 per 100,000 births.

JFK MEDICAL CENTER IN MONROVIA, LIBERIA
As the only tertiary referral and teaching hospital for the Republic of Liberia, JFKMC’s mission is to provide expert care in all medical specialties. As a visiting physician practicing at JFKMC, you would be able to engage in clinical work in your specialty, put systems in place to institutionalize your knowledge and expertise, and supervise the work of junior physicians and interns.

The institution currently lacks qualified physicians in nearly every specialty. The most pressing needs are for orthopaedic surgeons, general surgeons, cardiologists, and OB/GYN. Although the institution lacks some diagnostic tools found in Western hospitals, it does have modern, recently renovated facilities, including robust laboratory, radiology, and pharmacy services. A part of your visit could include recommendations for additional equipment necessary to provide first-rate care in your specialty.

A REWARDING EXPERIENCE
Past visiting doctors have found that working at JFKMC provides an opportunity to practice medicine in its purest form, to heal and improve the lives of the less fortunate. In the face of such great need, your presence will be truly valued and truly valuable.

LIVING IN MONROVIA
JFKMC ‘s recently renovated doctors’ dormitory provides Western-style accommodations on the hospital campus , including wireless internet, air conditioning, and satellite TV. 2 meals a day are provided to visiting doctors, as well as local transportation and cell phone service.
Short-term and long-term volunteer opportunities are available. For those committing to serve for 3 months or longer, the institution can offer a salary of up to $5,000 per month. Interested physicians are welcome to visit the medical center for a few days to learn more about the facility, paid for by JFKMC.
